I have to write this in “reaction” to a movie release review that i saw in “Telugu Maa TV”. There is a new movie that is getting release shortly by name “9th class“. I have no idea if this would be a sequel to the “10th Class” movie. The story like goes between two “KIDS” in the school and they falling in so called “LOVE”.

What are all these Directors and Producers taking the people to ? What “message” do they want to spread across the people ? Once kids watch these movies they inherently have a kind of “Cool” feeling that it is normal to fall in love at that age and it is OK. Producers/Directors/Script Writers may say that they are only showing whats happening in some cities/towns. But by making a “small” incident a movie, we are basically trying to “Publicize” this event and unfortunately movies are “Colorful and Cool”. Unfortunately real life is no way near to what they show in movies. Kids don’t have the discretion power to know what is right and what is wrong, they only care about what is “Cool”.

In the last few years all the movies have a famous dialog “Lepukupota” by Hero. A trend has started that it is Heroism to oppose parents and flee to other places, get married. Everyone has their own reason and movies portray this as a big thing. Unconsciously movies are dragging adults/kids away from their natural lives and are creating a false pride and false confidence.

If you feel these kind of movies should be avoided, please do a negative publicity about these movies. Ask your friends and family not to watch them and spread this word. Discourage your kids to watch these kind of movies. What you think as “cool nice family entertainment movie is going to form a NEGATIVE impression in your kids mind”.

P.S. Of course, parents themselves should have some values before they talk to their kids about this.

Coming from the Hindu/Indian background the above headline seems to be naturally occuring without much of effort for many people. A person who would have said “I pray to god but not that much” in his 20s would say “Everything is a phase in life” in his late 30s while he enjoys lot of religious activities everyday. Following is the short analysis of mine in this world. In the following narration i am using “MANY” to denote my friends, relatives and strangers whom i have observed including myself.

Till the age of 10 MANY of us are in the fairy tale wonderland probably like Lord Of the Rings settings. We love all sorts of Toys, like to have more toys than your friend. We consider “Dad” as a hero and no one can beat him. With the little Karate or Kung Fu that we learn from teacher (who does not know what he is teaching), we always believe that we could win over this world. My 6 year old nephew always tells me when he is angry that “I will throw you in the Hawaiian Lava (volcano) with his power ranger’s kick”. MANY would go to temples and may even learn some religious songs, but “who cares about god”.

Now things change from 10-20 where most of Indian origin kids are fighting to do their 10th grade, Engineering/Medical/Law and struggling to get into a college. Friends, Movies, Theme Parks, Electronic Gadgets, Driving a Motor Bike or Car are the most preferred thing to do. This age we would go to Temples or pray god because we want to get good grades, want to get into a cool college and father should send us to that Goa trip. But still you would not really care What do you exactly pray or what do those some of “Mantras” means “Who Cares…”.

A lot of us would probably want to get into a nice multinational (now-a-days everything is a MNC) company draw a 6 digit salary, spend the salary in pubs, music, discos, travel with friends, buy a car, bike etc… This is the time that MANY spend maximum amount of money on one self. Because all the things that you would do are probably reflexions of the childhood fantasies. You want to “live every moment (in a pub)” and you see sky as the limits. MANY forget the existence of “Religion/God” at this age because You have a nice Job, You earn lot of Money, with lot of money you could get whatever you want. It looks like you have everything in life and there is not need to have a religion which asks you to do certain rituals. You may even forget some of the festivals as you “don’t care”. If someone tells you, “It is Dewali tomorrow”. You might say “Oh really!!! I didn’t know”.

Between the age of 30-40 the real accomplishments in life begins. I guess MOST of the readers would agree!. If you typically look at a person in age 30-40 he probably have following things. Each point that is “underlined” is the “Event/Characteristic” and the one following it is “anything can go wrong” (most commonly).

Just bought a house(s); Need to pay monthly EMIs.

Just got Married; Need to spend some money to settle after marriage (as we rarely see joint families).

Looking forward to have kids; There’s a medical condition that prevents them from kids.

Have elderly parents (of age 60-70); They always have medical problem that you need to look after.

Highly rewarding job; Too much of struggle to move up the ladder.

Wife works; Perhaps she has her job in a different city or country.

Have 2 nice kids; Sleepless nights + hospital visits + mental tension.

Got married; Did not marry whom you love.

Nice Job; Boss does not recognize you.

…

…

Now once you get all of the above things + some more which i did not mention keep going in life, you tend to slow down in your brain. You see the world as more of “Uncertainties” rather than “CanDo” attitude. There are some issues that you may not share with your spouse/friends/parents/relatives… now you need someone who just listens to you. You need some one who listens to you and does not “preach”. Preaching is what you would get everywhere right. So you would want to avoid it as far as possible. Also this is the time that you realize that you need people to get some of the things done. See… to accomplish all of the above you would join some religious activities, starts praying more frequently and when people wink at you, you would say…”It’s the matter maturity, you would not understand it now” . Hope for many of you, it may sound as though you heard it somewhere.

Of course there are other category of people who are totally confident of them selves, luckily (or by god’s grace) everything goes good for them. So they don’t even think about God. They call them selves god and they may even say “Aham Bramhasmi”.

It it not pretty interesting to see all these different kinds of people. Do you have any other experiences…. ?

Many of us are moving to green now-a-days and often its a challenge to find some alternatives to the plastics that we use. Following is the description of the Types of plastics and how good/bad they are. Hope this helps in conscious choice.

PETE: Polyethylene terephthalate ethylene used for soft drink, juice, water, detergent, cleaner and peanut butter containers. It was considered the safest and is the most common plastic and easy to recycle. However, a recent study found traces of DEHP in bottled water stored in a PET bottle for more than 9 months.

HDPE: High density polyethylene, used in opaque plastic milk and water jugs, bleach, detergent and shampoo bottles and some plastic bags. It is considered safe and easy to recycle.

PVC or V or DEHA : Polyvinyl chloride or di(2-ethylhexyl)adipate used for cling wrap, some plastic squeeze bottles, cooking oil and peanut butter jars, detergent and window cleaner bottles. PVC is well known to be associated with liver cancer. DEHA is linked to negative effects on the liver, kidney, spleen, bone formation and body weight. It is the least recyclable.

LDPE: Low density polyethylene, used in grocery store bags, most plastic wraps and some bottles. It is considered safe but hard to recycle.

PP: Polypropylene, used in most Rubbermaid, deli soup, syrup and yogurt containers, straws and other clouded plastic containers, including baby bottles. It is considered safe but hard to recycle.

PS: Polystyrene, used in Styrofoam food trays, egg cartons, disposable cups and bowls, carry-out containers and opaque plastic cutlery. Styrene can leach from polystyrene and is toxic to the brain and nervous system. It also has been found to affect red blood cells, liver, kidneys and stomach in animal studies. It is hard to recycle.

Other: Usually polycarbonate, used in most plastic baby bottles, 5-gallon water bottles, “sport” water bottles, metal food can liners, clear plastic “sippy” cups and some clear plastic cutlery. New bio-based plastics may also be labeled #7. Polycarbonate can leach Bisphenol A, a chemical that mimics the action of the human hormone estrogen. It was found to stimulate prostate cancer, produce ovarian dysfunction, genetic damage, etc. (see Baby Bottles free of BPA).

Just few minutes back me and my family had a great discussion on “Inquiry” on God. My parents, my 2 sisters, my wife and my niece were in this discussion from night 9.30pm till 12.30am. We are generally a god loving and god fearing family at the same my me, my wife and my second sister are sort of close knitted with the idea and practice the “self-image-of-god”. Of course, we are not trying to prove who is right and who is wrong; instead, we are reasoning each and every practice of ours.

Group 1 (Fundamentalists): They believe that there is GOD controlling everything on this earth and the entire universe. Anything that goes against GOD is deemed to be marked as sin. They believe in each and everything that different gods say, practice and preach. They highly believe in different Gurus and Babas. Once they believe in a Guru, whatever guru says, that’s the ultimate truth and there is no need to verify anything. They have GOD as the support system and whenever they get into trouble, they ask GOD for help. They don’s like the idea that you can create your own luck and your own destiny.

Group 2 (Independent Thinkers): They believe that there is a greater power that keeps everything intact in this world. They can’t believe something unless there is a proof and logical (and not religious) explanation for it. When someone says “It’s like that”… they follow them with the “Why and How”. They like to believe in them selves and each and every consequence is the result of their action. If they become success, it’s because they worked hard and gained certain skills in life that helped them. Instead of keeping their support system in GOD, they believe in their wife, friends and parents. They believe that Parents and Teachers are the greatest people who make you as areal Person and grateful to them.

Questions from Independent Thinkers :

“Everyone is same in front of God” is the popular belief. If this is the case, why do different people have different problems in life. There is a great disparity in lives, wealth and growth of people. Person whom we see would have done a great work at their home and work but would have had a pitiful death.

As a Father, one would take care of their kids till the death. If one considers GOD to be the father, why does he inflict pain and suffering in people. Does GOD likes the one who worships him a lot ?

Many scriptures talk about the “Karma”. Whatever you do in this life is carry forwarded to next life and this life is completely the result of previous. If we back track like this, there is one life in which all of us have a clean chit and we all are real good guys. Then God had some weird ideas and made some good and some bad. Why does he need to create the bad guys ? Can’t he suggest or reprimand his own kids about good and bad things. On the other hand, if every decision is mine, what is the need of GOD ?

If i need to anyway take the pain and pay my debts of my past sins, why should i care about GOD ?

God is the one who created the Lion in jungle and Lion eats all the animals and had great power and strength. Does that mean that the Lion is bad and it will go to hell ? So, now GOD is the one who gave it the natural power and he is the one who is punishing it (because it kills and eats smaller animals)?

If Gurus and Babas are correct and they are the ultimate gods, then whatever they say also MUST happen. The fact that many of us see different results of such predictions indicates that we should be cautious to know what to follow and what not to follow. Blind faith is dangerous for everyone.

Following added on 10/05/2009

Who is God

Who is Guru

Differences between God and Guru

How can Guru help me attaining my goals

What is Spirituality

Spirituality in Practice and how can it help you

If Karma is definite for everyone, then how can i face it

I do lot of prayers and lot of poojas. Why do i get MORE problems than others

How can i maintain spirituality in this modern world

I do prayers everyday. Am i liberated ?

I pray and go to temples frequently. Am i a good devotee ?

I don’t pray or go to temples frequently but i respect and thing about god. Am i a good devotee ?

What are the vales that we should pass on to our kids ?

Why should i do Pooja ?

If Karma and Fate are definite and nothing can change it. Then why do all spiritual leaders say that if you pray god, your hardships will be gone ?

We often hear that the destiny of a man is written on his face when he takes birth. If so, our puranas also tells that by doing poojas, many women stopped the death of their husbands. Now, people are confused about who is right. What should they listen to.

What is the power of Mantra ? Why should i chant ?

If you listen to Ramayana, MahaBharata and other Puranams, you get quite confused about the interpretations of Gurus. Not to mention the names of gurus, One started saying that Ramayana should be treated as though Rama and Sita are ONLY human beings. And on several occations, he also talks about they did something as a human but in their mind they know that they are here for a purpose. The author tries to substantiate whatever Rama/Sita/Lakshmana does in the whole plot. In the end, we get a feeling that a sentense can be interpreted in a number of ways. And the spiritual leaders tries to PUSH this idea of Ramayana into people by POSITIVE interpretation of an action even though it’s not.

e.g. During the Sitapaharana scenes, Rama goes out to get the Golden Deer and once Deer shouts in the voice of Rama, Sita gets worried. At that time Sita says lot of bad things to Lakshmana, who initally refuses to go out to protect Rama. Sita suspects lakshmana that he wants Sita and he was with them only to kill Rama and then marry Sita. Once these verses are over, almost all the interpreters say that she says this not because Lakshmana is bad but unless she says this he will not go out. She knows that they are here for the purpose and the purpose is to kill Ravana. In this manner, if an author goes on supporting whatever is said by the Ramayana characters, then everything they say seems to be CORRECT. There is no logical explanation but you just need to believe it without thinking further.

Of course we did not get answers to many of our questions and we are still in the discussion process. Please do let us know what you think about this topic and i would like to hear more about your experiences and beliefs.

Though i am living in USA from past 3 years, i have not seen such a beautiful place. The early morning walk with a lot of fog, beautiful green pine trees and old houses with little bit of snow and rich culture is what i miss here.
Anyway, my Saahithi is 1 month old now and i am sure that we will visit Germany, Austria, Italy, Spain, Swiss and France again before i retire

On 05.31.2009 at 3.40am PST i was in deep sleep to realize the smoke and suffocation. When I woke up, i realized that the smoke is due to fire and i could hear a fire alarm. I went to all the rooms to check if it is not coming from my apartment and then i opened my bedroom’s window to see that a car is on fire. Of course in real life this is the first time i saw fire coming out of a car and the fire was intense. The immediate thing i did was to call the 911 and they in turn connected to the fire department. I gave the address of apartment and location and they were here in the location in 2.5 minutes.

This is the first time that i saw the fire rescue team and they were very prompt to take the hose and immediately started the water. After 10 minutes the fire came down but there was a lot of smoke coming out of the engine. So they used some ultra high-fi cutters to cut open the hood and sprayed the extinguisher.

The entire operation took around 2 hours and all the while i was thinking about the adverse effects of the fire if no one would have seen it. If the fire came to the gas tank, it would have been a disaster and all the wood railings would have caught fire. Anyway, with great sincerity i extend my tanks to Fremont Fire Department for their good work. Probably t his is a real small incident that fire department takes care of, but for me i understand the amount of brevity, timely action and courage they show to rescue and proactively put off 100s and 1000s of fire incidents.

Everyone knows about the cholesterol and it’s ill effects. I am sure there are so many of us trying to see a great reduction in the cholesterol and triglycerides. I have done enough personal research to publish my own experiences and suggestions. Hope many of you would be able to take at least few tips from this article. The food and lifestyle changes are in the context of Asian-Indians living in India or abroad. These changes are not only for the cholesterol reduction but also for a healthy life style. These are the experiences collected from Dr.Mantena RamaRaju, The CR Way, and Longevity Diet.

Do’s / Recommended Food :

Moderation is the Key. For many of us this is the hardest part to train our brain.

Have early dinner. If you have a late dinner, there are more chances that the energy is converted to fat and stored in body. Early dinner makes it possible for your body to absorb the energy and also spend some amount of it before you go to bed.

Recommendation is to have smaller meals at regular intervals RATHER than heavy dinner or heavy lunch.

Try not to skip break-fast. Having break-fast does not mean to have a heavy break fast worth 500 calories. Even if you have a fresh fruit juice or 200gms of fruits, it goes a long way.

Do not take water while having a meal. Instead, have water between the meals to keep your body hydrated. It is not a reason to say that the food is spicy to take water. Make food in such a way that it is not necessary to have water along with meal.

3-4 small meals of fruits is very necessary that your body gets natural food. It could be a apple in the morning. Banana in the afternoon. Pear in the evening and Water Melon at night.

Protein content in food is very important. Thus, it is necessary to have all sorts of beans to help you maintain good health and body’s basic metabolic activity. Protein can come from Milk, Beans and all sorts of Lentils.

Calcium is very important part of your daily diet. It is not only necessary for women but an important component for men too. This constitutes for major part of your bone strength at your old age.

Iron can be obtained from many of the vegetables. Even if you take your vegetables daily, it is recommended to take at least 2-3 dates every day. Many people have the illusion that dates gives alot of energy, but the average dates available on the market gives only 50-70 Calories per 3 dates.

Carbohydrates are essential for your body. Potato, Sweet Potato, Rice, Wheat and other millets gives you abundant carbohydrates. In any case, all the vegetables or processed food that you buy, essentially contains carbohydrates. This is one part that you need not worry and at the same time restrain from having too much of them. Carbohydrates potentially increase your Triglycerides.

Moderation of sodium in foods. Ideally it is NOT necessary to add any salt to the foods (EXCEPT for taste). Each and every vegetable HAS some amount of salt in it. So, it is necessary to add salt in our foods that we eat.

Eat more of salads for lunch and dinner as a first course. Salads fills your stomach with more water content and also acts as a good source for dietary fibers.

Following vegetables, fruits, fats, beans and nuts are highly recommended for day-to-day consumption. These can be taken along with your break fast, lunch and dinner.

Dont’s / Not-Recommended :

Laziness seems to be the biggest hurdle for so many people to come out of their comfort zones and do something worthwhile.

Procrastination : Do not differ any good resolutions that helps your health. We always feel to do a thing tomorrow. But unfortunately, due to ill health many do not see tomorrow.

Live in Today and Live for Today. Tomorrow is uncertain.

When we talk about the fruit juices, they are NOT the preserved fruit juices that we get in market. You need to take fresh fruit juice made at home and no sugar added.

Do not drink or at the least limit the intake of the Coffee. If you like something hot to take, prefer black/green tea. These days you get a lot of tea with anti-oxidants.

Do not take Frozen, Processed or Preserved food. You MUST avoid them to greater extent. (I have used a strong work “MUST” as these foods are absolutely forbidden if you need good health)

Preservatives are bad for your system. When you need to sanitize your home, you use all sorts of chemicals to kill bacteria and virus. This is the same reasoning that goes for preservatives. If food need to look fresh for long time, you need to apply these preservatives. They are harmful chemicals in mild quantities which can cause damage to your system in long run.

Do not have any kind of deep fried foods. If you fry your food in butter or vegetable oils you get a lot of additional saturated and trans fats which are bad for your cholesterol and bad for heart disease. Good fats are found in vegetable and fish oils and they won’t raise your cholesterol.

Summary : We all dream of a very good health and there by good life. However very few actually make it to the end of the life for many different reasons. Many likes to enjoy the first part of the life in ignorance (for almost 50 years) and loose on the second half of life to different health problems (diabetes, blood pressure, heart problems, etc…). Body is the tool by which one achieves different things in life. Without sound body one can not have sound mind and thus your actions will speak for it.

Realizing the mistakes and finding the right method/tool for your body’s health is the difficult thing for many. Challenge is to find the right path and then to walk through that path. Many look at the health as a periodic event that starts and ends; but this is the biggest mistake. Your health starts when you are born and ends when your die. So, you need to do everything to keep it at its best.We need to inculcate the good habits as out LIFESTYLE rather than a periodic event. When someone goes to Weight Watchers, the idea is to reduce few pounds in months time. But the same person, who reduced 20 pounds will increase by 30 pounds. These kind of short-cuts will definitely show results in the short-term but are no good for the life time health. If you have any experiences related to health, please do share and let others benefit.
